Planting and General
Information
Bare root hardwood
seedlings are pulled and shipped December through early April.
They are packed at a count of 100 to 200 seedlings per bag with a
moisture retaining gel applied to the roots. They will store fine
for several weeks if kept in a cooler or in a cool place out of
the sun and wind. Hardwood seedlings can be hand planted with a
dibble or a sharpshooter shovel. They may also be machine planted
using a tractor.
Deep plug container
pine seedlings are generally shipped and planted between September
and April. They are packed 334 per box, three boxes making 1000
seedlings. There is a 1 box minimum order. Seedlings can be
shipped UPS, or motor freight. These seedlings can be planted
with a dibble or with a planting tool that matches the shape of
the root plug. They can also be machine planted with a tractor.
We grow larger trees in
containers, generally in a three or fifteen gallon container.
These trees can be planted any time of the year, as long as
moisture levels are sufficient. They should be watered in after
planting though, to insure no air pockets are left around the
roots. After removing the container, the root ball can be
“scored” using a pocket knife or shovel. This means making
vertical slits about ½ to 1 inch deep around the root ball. There
are many advantages to planting larger trees. A well developed
root system results in faster growth and higher survival rates.
Larger trees generally have a better form with a strong central
leader and branching. And of course a larger tree will produce
acorns, seed, or soft mast more quickly than a seedling.
